What Thickness Acrylic Should You Use? Technical Guide

A 2mm display piece feels fragile; a 10mm piece feels built. But thicker does not always mean better, and over-specifying thickness wastes cost and weight. Here is how to choose the right thickness for any acrylic job.

Thickness vs rigidity: the trade-off

Acrylic stiffness rises with the cube of thickness. A 3mm shelf sags under light load; a 6mm shelf holds firm. But jumping from 5mm to 10mm does not double the stiffness, it increases cost by 80 to 100 percent. For most display and signage work, 3 to 6mm is the sweet spot.

By application

2–3mm: light displays, literature holders, menu cards, window decals. 3–4mm: counter risers, tiered stands, light podiums. 5–6mm: floor stands, large signage letters, exhibition pieces. 8–10mm: structural work, load-bearing shelves, architectural panels. 15–20mm: extreme durability or heavy load. Over 25mm: engineering parts, not display.

Edge thickness matters as much as face thickness

A 3mm sheet with edges flame-polished looks premium; a 10mm sheet with raw sawn edges looks unfinished. Specify edge finish along with thickness. Diamond-polished edges need at least 4mm to look their best; 2–3mm polished edges are possible but delicate.

Casting versus extrusion by thickness

Cast acrylic is standard up to 50mm and always the premium choice for visible work. Extruded runs 1 to 12mm and is the cost choice for hidden glazing or high-volume forming. Thick cast (over 20mm) needs longer cooling and lead time. Specialty thicknesses (14mm, 18mm) often require casting and an import lead time.

Laser cutting limits by thickness

Laser cuts up to 25mm acrylic crisply; 25–30mm cuts slower and edges brown slightly. Over 30mm, laser cutting is inefficient; use CNC routing instead. Thick laser-cut edges (20mm+) need diamond polishing to look clear, which adds cost. If the edge will be seen and the spec is over 15mm, plan on machine polishing.

Weight and transport

Acrylic weighs 1.2 kg per liter. A 1200×2400mm sheet in 3mm weighs 11kg; in 10mm it weighs 35kg. Doubling thickness triples the weight and cost of transport, a hidden factor on large pieces or multi-unit orders.

The verdict

Start at 3mm for displays that will be touched, 4mm for floor units, 5–6mm for large signage or exhibition work. Only go thicker if the piece must support load or take abuse. Polish the edges on anything visible. When in doubt, send a sketch and we quote the right thickness for your job.
