A CO₂ laser beam melts a narrow line through acrylic, leaving a flame-polished edge that is glossy and clear, ideal for letters, logos and intricate shapes. Laser cuts are fast and accurate to ±0.1mm. The downside: laser maxes out at 25mm thick and does not cut square edges.
A spinning cutter mills acrylic like wood, leaving a square edge that sits flush in frames or on shelves. CNC routing excels at thick acrylic (10–50mm+), pockets, grooves and repeatable production runs. The downside: square edges are not as glass-like as laser-polished edges and fine detail requires smaller cutters that slow production.
Display letters and logos that need a glossy polished edge. Fine filigree and intricate patterns. Thin sheet (up to 6mm) where a polished edge is on show. Engraved text or detail (laser engraves white on clear or dark acrylic). Decorative pieces where the edge is part of the design.

The best acrylic work often uses both: CNC route the thick base panel with square edges and pockets, then laser cut and glue the fine letter overlay onto the polished CNC edges. This is how premium 3D signage gets made.
Laser cutting is faster than CNC for fine work, so simple laser-cut pieces cost less. CNC routing is fast for repeated pockets or grooves on thick material, so production runs of structural parts favour CNC. For one-off complex work, laser usually wins on price.
Choose laser cutting for anything visible where edge quality matters. Choose CNC routing for thick acrylic or parts that need square edges. For complex pieces, ask your fabricator to quote both and combine them if cost allows.
