Large Format Acrylic in Dubai: Panels and Bonded Pieces Over 2 Metres

Most acrylic questions are about small things. This one is about big ones: a four-metre feature wall, a two-metre-deep reception desk front, a bonded display case taller than the person looking at it. Large format is a different craft from cutting a desk sign. The material limits, the joints, the handling and the install all change. Here is what is actually possible and what it takes.

Large Format Acrylic in Dubai: Panels and Bonded Pieces Over 2 Metres — acrylic fabrication by RS Acrylics in Dubai

The real size limit is the sheet, then the door

Cast acrylic arrives in standard sheets, commonly up to about 2000 by 3000mm, with some grades and thicknesses available larger. So a single uninterrupted panel is capped by what the mill makes and what we can import. Beyond that you are joining, and the joint is the whole discussion. The second limit people forget is access: a 3-metre panel has to pass a loading bay, a service lift and a door frame. We check the route before we quote, because a panel that cannot reach the wall is scrap.

Invisible bonding is what makes a big panel possible

Two sheets can be joined so the seam almost disappears. It is a solvent or UV-cured bond on a machined edge, done in a clean, temperature-controlled space, then polished. Done well you see a faint line at close range and nothing from two metres. Done badly you get bubbles, a cloudy band and a joint that fails under heat. This is the single biggest difference between workshops. Ask to see a bonded sample, edge on, under a light, before you award a large job.

Thickness for big pieces is not a style choice

A large panel carries its own weight and moves with temperature. For feature walls and partitions above two metres, 10mm is a floor and 15 to 20mm is common. A reception desk front that people lean on wants 15mm or more. Thin sheet at large scale shows every fixing as a dimple and reads as cheap no matter how good the graphics are. If the budget forces thinner material, reduce the panel size instead and treat the joint as a design line.

Backlighting a large surface without hot spots

A big lit panel is a lighting job as much as a plastics job. Opal acrylic diffuses LEDs, but the gap behind the sheet needs to be roughly the LED spacing or you see every diode. On a four-metre wall that means a designed cavity, not a guess. We prefer to supply the panel, the frame and the LED modules together, tested as one unit in the workshop, so the site electrician only brings power to it.

Handling, crating and the install crew

Large acrylic is heavy, flexible and scratches if you look at it wrong. Pieces travel vertically in purpose-built crates with the protective film on, and come off the truck with enough people to carry them without flexing. Install is usually after hours with the route cleared. The film comes off last, after the dust settles. Most damage to large panels happens in the final ten metres, so that part is planned, not improvised.

Where large format earns its money

Reception and lobby feature walls. Retail shopfront and in-store brand walls. Hotel and restaurant partitions and bar backs. Developer sales-gallery model enclosures. Museum and exhibition cases. Curved and thermoformed elements that no other clear material can do at that scale. In each of these, acrylic does something glass cannot: it can be curved, bonded without visible hardware, lit from within and cut to a shape.

How to brief a large-format enquiry

Give us the finished size, the thickness if you know it, whether it is lit, where it sits, and photographs of the access route from the loading bay to the wall. Say whether we install. With that we can tell you in one reply whether it is a single panel or a bonded assembly, what it costs, and how many nights the install takes.

The verdict

Large format comes down to three things: the sheet size you can actually get, a bond you can stand next to, and an access route you measured. Specify 10mm as a minimum above two metres, see a bonded sample before awarding, and plan the last ten metres of the install.

Frequently asked questions

What is the largest acrylic panel available in the UAE?

A single cast sheet commonly reaches around 2000 by 3000mm depending on grade and thickness. Anything larger is a bonded assembly, which is routine for us, and the visible quality depends entirely on the bond.

Can two acrylic sheets be joined invisibly?

Almost. A machined edge with a solvent or UV-cured bond, then polished, leaves a faint line at close range that disappears from a couple of metres. Ask any supplier for an edge-on bonded sample under a light.

How thick should a large acrylic feature wall be?

10mm is the minimum above two metres and 15 to 20mm is common for lit or load-bearing surfaces. Thin sheet at large scale telegraphs every fixing point.

Can you deliver and install oversized acrylic panels in Dubai?

Yes. Pieces are crated vertically with the film on and installed after hours with a cleared route. We check the loading bay, lift and door dimensions before quoting, because access decides whether a single panel is possible.
